[If Max could see into those thoughts, he'd more than certainly agree to them-- but he's his own little alien mind and it's a strange place in there and so he's going to do his best to ride things out as they come. It's still a new thing for Max, a new type of relationship and world.
This isn't New Mexico, and Jason is a very different type of person than most his friends back home. He likes that, a lot. Well, maybe there's a tad of Michael in there, but he's not sure. There's something in the eyes, a flash, but Max doesn't know. ]
